Visa on Arrival or C7C? What Retreat Leaders Can and Can't Do in Bali

Ask a few people on the island how they came to Bali to run a retreat, and you'll hear a lot of "I just came on a Visa on Arrival." It's quick, familiar, and it's what most visitors use. So it's natural to assume it covers everything.

For a holiday, it does. For leading a retreat as your work, it's a different question. The visa you arrive on should match what you'll actually be doing in Bali, and for retreat leaders that usually points to the C7C.

Here's how the two compare.

The Visa on Arrival: Built for Visiting

The Visa on Arrival (VOA), and its online version, the e-VOA, are tourist visas. They're designed for people visiting Bali, and they work well for that.

  • Who it's for: visitors from eligible countries; the list is published on the official e-visa site

  • How long: 30 days, extendable once for another 30, so 60 days at most

  • What it allows: tourism and visiting

What it does not allow matters just as much. A tourist visa does not permit you to teach, lead sessions, create paid content or conduct professional activities. If you are hosting a retreat as your work, that's the part that counts.

For everything guests need on arrival, see our guide to Bali's new entry rules in 2026. This post is about the person leading the retreat.

The C7C: Built for Wellness Events

The C7C is the visa for wellness events, and it lasts 30 days. If you're running a yoga retreat, a meditation or breathwork retreat, a healing or coaching retreat or a similar wellness gathering, it's the visa designed for that kind of event.

It's also the one we help with most, because most of our clients are running retreats, not conferences or corporate programs. If your event is a corporate one, the C10, the visa for corporate events, lasts 60 days. Our guide to the C7C and C10 visas covers how the two differ.

Side by Side

  • Visa on Arrival / e-VOA — a tourist visa; 30 days, extendable once for 30 more; doesn't permit teaching, leading sessions, paid content or professional activities

  • C7C — a visa for wellness events; 30 days; built for the kind of work a retreat leader does

The simplest way to choose: ask whether you'll be leading, teaching or running the event as your work. If the answer is yes, you want a visa built for that, not a tourist visa.

"But Lots of People Do It on a Tourist Visa"

It's true that you'll meet people who do. It's also true that what other people do isn't a reliable guide to what's allowed. A tourist visa is meant for tourism, and its limits are clear: it does not permit teaching, leading sessions or professional activity.

When you're running a retreat with paying guests, your reputation and your plans are tied to it. Starting with the right visa keeps that part of the retreat simple, so you can focus on your guests.

Why Not Just Work It Out Yourself?

You can read the rules yourself, and it's worth understanding the basics. But requirements vary by passport and by the type of activity, and the details are easy to misjudge from another country. That's why many leaders ask a local service partner.

We're not a visa agency, but we guide you through it. We help you work out which visa fits your retreat, introduce you to our licensed legal partner, and provide a document checklist for your situation. Your legal partner submits and manages the application. You can read the full process in our guide on how to get a C7C visa, step by step.

Timing

Processing typically takes 5 to 14 business days once your application is submitted. We recommend starting at least four weeks before you arrive. Our Bali retreat planning timeline shows how the visa fits alongside everything else you need to arrange.
