DOLPHIN WATCHING AT LOVINA
Dolphin Watching at Lovina offers you the chance to see wild dolphins in their natural home, just off the coast of North Bali. These waters are recognised as an Important Marine Mammal Area, where dolphin families live, feed and raise their young. It's a peaceful morning with nature that stays with you long after you're back on shore.
The trip is led by local boat captains who have grown up on this coastline. They know these waters by heart, reading the sea for fins and splashes to find where the dolphins are swimming that morning. Dolphin watching has been part of life in Lovina since the late 1980s, and it's a big part of how these coastal families make a living.
Guests gather at the beach while it's still dark and head out on a jukung, the traditional Balinese outrigger boat. As the sky slowly turns gold over the Bali Sea, the North Bali mountains appear behind you and the search begins. The most common visitors are spinner dolphins, famous for their playful spinning leaps. Since these are wild dolphins, every morning is different, and the captains keep a respectful distance so the dolphins can carry on with their day.
This activity takes place at Lovina Beach in Buleleng, North Bali. It is about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive from Ubud, and the boats leave around sunrise, so if dolphin watching is on your list, we suggest staying in North Bali. Check out our venue partners in the North Bali area here.

questions
frequently asked questions
What time does the dolphin watching start?
Early in the morning, around sunrise. Boats usually leave around 6:00 AM, so guests meet at the beach at about 5:30 to 5:45 AM.
Are dolphin sightings guaranteed?
Sightings are very common, but they can't be guaranteed. The dolphins are wild and free to come and go, which is exactly what makes seeing them so special.
What kind of dolphins will we see?
You'll most likely see spinner dolphins. Fraser's dolphins also live in North Bali waters, and other species visit from time to time.
Can we do this as a day trip from Ubud?
It's possible, but you'd need to leave Ubud at around 2:30 to 3:00 AM. Staying in North Bali makes the morning much more relaxed.
Do I need to know how to swim?
Not at all. You'll be watching from the boat the whole time, and life jackets are provided.
Is this activity suitable for everyone?
It's a gentle, family-friendly activity. As the boats are small and the sea can move, pregnant guests or anyone with back problems or strong seasickness should check with their doctor first.
What should I wear and bring?
Light clothes, a light jacket for the cool early morning, sandals that are easy to slip off, sunscreen, a hat and a waterproof pouch for your phone. If you get seasick easily, take your tablet before getting on the boat.
When is the best time of year to go?
Boats run year-round. The sea is usually calmest from April to October. During the rainy season (November to March), trips still run, but weather is less predictable and captains may reschedule if it's unsafe.
