MOUNT BATUR TREKKING

Mount Batur Trekking takes you to the top of an active volcano in time to watch the sun rise over Bali. Standing at about 1,700 metres in Kintamani, Mount Batur last erupted in 2000 and still sends up steam from its crater today. From the summit, you can see the sky glow over Lake Batur, with Mount Agung and, on clear mornings, even Mount Rinjani in Lombok on the horizon.

Every trek is led by a licensed local guide from the villages around the mountain, as the Mount Batur trekking guide association requires. They know every step of the trail and help guests through the steeper parts. Mount Batur is one of Bali's sacred mountains, and many guides stop at a temple along the way to ask for a safe journey.

The adventure begins in the early hours with a pick-up from your venue, then the hike starts in the dark by torchlight. It takes around 1.5 to 2 hours to reach the summit, just in time for sunrise. At the top, guests enjoy a simple breakfast, often with eggs cooked in the volcano's natural steam, before exploring the crater rim and heading back down. It's an early start, but the view makes every step worth it.

This activity takes place in Kintamani, about 1 to 1.5 hours' drive north of Ubud.

Pick-up from Ubud is usually around 2:00 AM, and the hike starts at about 4:00 AM. This gets you to the summit before sunrise, and you'll be back at your venue by late morning.

It's a moderate hike with around 700 metres of climbing. Anyone with average fitness can do it, although the last part is steep with loose gravel, so take your time.

Around 1.5 to 2 hours up and about 1 to 1.5 hours down, depending on your pace and how busy the trail is.

Yes. Hiking Mount Batur requires a licensed local guide, and solo hiking isn't allowed. Your guide will lead the way, carry torches and make sure everyone gets up and down safely.

Good trekking shoes or sneakers with a strong grip, a light jacket for the chilly summit, a hat, sunglasses and sunscreen for the walk down. Also bring a water bottle, insect repellent and some small cash for a coffee at the top.

We recommend having a light snack before the hike and bringing some snacks and water with you. There's also a small stall at the summit that sells coffee and light snacks.

The trek runs all year, but the dry season (around April to October) usually brings the clearest sunrise views. In the rainy season, clouds may cover the view, and treks can be cancelled if the weather or volcano conditions aren't safe.

You may meet some cheeky monkeys on the trail, especially on the way down. They're used to people, but it's best to keep food packed away and watch them from a distance.
