PENGLIPURAN VILLAGE TOUR
Penglipuran Village is a traditional Balinese village in the cool highlands of Bangli, known around the world as one of the cleanest villages on the planet. With its car-free main street, neat rows of matching traditional gates and spotless stone paths, it offers a rare glimpse into a way of life that has been carefully preserved for generations.
The guided village tour is led by a local guide from the village, who shares the stories, customs and values that shape daily life here. You’ll learn how the village is laid out by sacred zones, with temples at the top, family homes in the middle and the cemetery at the bottom. You’ll also hear how the whole community takes pride in caring for their home together. Tourism here is community-run, so your visit directly supports the village.
The tour takes you along the main street and into the village, where some families welcome visitors into their traditional compounds. From there, you’ll walk down to the ancestral bamboo forest, which the village has protected for generations and which earned them a national environmental award. It’s a cool, peaceful place for a slow walk and a rest at the bamboo café. The visit takes about 2 to 3 hours. Groups who’d like to go deeper can add hands-on workshops such as bamboo weaving, offering making, klepon cooking or a Balinese dance class. These need advance booking, add extra time to the visit, and are best suited to larger groups.

questions
frequently asked questions
What makes Penglipuran Village special?
Penglipuran is recognised as one of the cleanest villages in the world, alongside Giethoorn in the Netherlands and Mawlynnong in India. It’s also loved for its preserved traditional layout, its car-free main street and its strong sense of community.
What will we do on the guided village tour?
A local guide will walk you through the village, sharing its history, customs and daily life. The tour includes the main street, traditional family compounds and the bamboo forest.
How long does the visit take?
The guided tour takes about 2 to 3 hours. If your group adds a workshop, plan for extra time.
What other activities are available?
The village also offers hands-on workshops such as bamboo weaving, canang sari offering making, klepon cooking, traditional herbal drink making, penjor making and Balinese dance classes. These are available for larger groups with advance booking, so let us know early if you’re interested.
What should I wear?
Comfortable shoes and modest clothing, with shoulders covered and nothing too revealing. A hat and sunscreen are handy, as the main street has little shade. You can also rent a traditional Balinese outfit in the village.
When is the best time to visit?
Early morning or late afternoon is cooler and quieter. Late morning to early afternoon is usually the busiest time.
Are there any cultural performances?
Yes. The village holds a Barong Macan performance every Sunday and showcases its bamboo traditions every Saturday and Sunday. If you’d like to see them, we can plan your visit around those days.
Is it a good stop to combine with other activities?
Yes. Penglipuran is close to places like Tirta Empul Temple, Besakih Temple and Kintamani, so it fits easily into a full day exploring East and Central Bali.
